Text: Marloes de Wit
Sunday 22nd March
‘A strange Saturdaynight’,
is how h calls the night after two
songs. And strange it is, not only because it’s Sunday
instead of Saturday. The nights starts scary when Lucy climbs
on stage at 8.30 pm to tell us that h is ill. Probably ate
something wrong, and he’s emptying his stomach right at that
moment, so Lucy asks us to get another beer or something and
be patient for 15 more minutes. Everybody’s holding his breath.
Imagine he’s not able to be there tonight…
But luckily for all of us he appears on stage after a little while,
a bit pale and obviously not feeling very well, but welcomed
with a huge applause!
This night is going to be for the short setlist. The long numbers.
And it’s going to be one of those nights!
A few Words for the Dead is the opening song. What a beauty is
that! And, just like the nights before, the whole crowd is singing
along. I cannot remember which previous gig or even which
previous convention that has been the case before.
Unbelievable! After the This Town trilogy we get
This is the 21st Century, and everybody sort of calms down.
Long time no hear! The quietness doesn’t stay long though,
because when the lights of the lighthouse shine over the crowd
everybody knows what we’ll be getting next: Ocean Cloud. And
people have been waiting a long time to hear this song again!
Goosebumps all over the place! What a beautiful song ànd a
beautiful lightshow!!
After If my Heart were a Ball (time for a smoke for a lot of people)
we get Interior Lulu! Another ‘long time no hear’ and people are
glad to hear it! It sounds a bit messy but is good to hear after
so long! Who ever was thinking Marillion fans didn’t like Kayleigh
should organize a party and ask the band to play it! More than
3000 people singing their hearts out, followed by Lavender and
the roof of the tent got of when they started Heart of Lothian!
Wow, wow, wow, wow.
Invisible Man is next in order. Though h seems to struggle with
the text every now and then it’s one of the best implementations
of the song I’ve heard, not in the least through all the emotions
coming by. And it just doesn’t stop anymore. Next song is
This Strange Engine. Earlier that day, during the quiz,
Steve Rothery was introduced as God. And boy, he really truly is,
what a great guitarsolo’s!! After TSE, the crowd doesn’t stop
cheering. H tries to speech, something he also tried during TSE,
but he can’t say much. Partly because of the cheering, and partly
because of his tears. The one thing he manages to do is thank
Erik Nielsen for all the work he has done for Marillion the past
years. (Erik’s got another job)
And the last song we get is, how appropriate, Neverland. As the
last tunes fade away, I don’t see many people with dry eyes.
What a gig! What a night! What a weekend! What a band!!!!!
